Ultrarunner Magazine are in the beautiful Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands to document and witness the fantastic runners participating in Trans-Gran Canaria 2023.
The Transgrancanria is a running festival between the 22nd and the 26th of February, 2023, bringing together professional athletes and ultra-trail lovers to take on the iconic terrain of the island.
In the past, we have seen athletes like Pau Capell, Hayden Hawks, Jared Hazen, Ruy Ueda, Kaytlyn Gerbin, Claire Bannwarth and Abby Hall take to the hills that traverse nearly half of the territory of which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The most challenging runners will face the classic 128km over 7000m (22,000 feet) of ascent, passing through incredible landscapes and picturesque villages. Other races include the 84km advanced, the 45km marathon and the 13km family trail. A 12km youth option is also available for the budding new athletes of the sport.
Having reached 500 runners in attendance in just 48 hours of registration opening, with 24 different nationalities set to be present, the event is set to be an astonishing feat of strength and endurance.
Racers will take on the El Gigante Vertical Kilometre, baptised as ‘The Giant’, tackling more than 1,100m of uphill slope over a 5km period. The inclusion of The Giant was added just a few years ago. It has racers pass through one of the most emblematic municipalities, Agaete, and to one of the most spectacular areas of the island, such as the Tamadaba massif.
We are honoured and excited to attend the event and provide you, our readers, with exclusive information right from the start line.
