Supported by young and old across the South-East, Brian Wood MC has completed an epic 635-mile multi-day endurance challenge, raising over £150,000 for Walking With The Wounded charity.
Wood completed 25 Marathons in 25 days, running 1 mile for each of the 635 soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan after his own personal experience during the battle of ‘Danny Boy’ and fulfilling his duty to remember those who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice.
Supported and facilitated by the Outside & Active team, the Ultimate Sacrifice challenge (theultimatesacrifice.co.uk) aimed to raise £20,000 for WWTW, but after his story captured the hearts of the nation, his fundraising total currently sits at just over £150,000 which will deliver employment, mental health and volunteering programmes to get those who served, and their families, back on their feet and making a positive contribution.
Commenting on the challenge, Brian said, “I feel it was my duty to remember and represent those individuals who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice serving their country. I have suffered mentally and physically through this challenge, but it is nothing compared to the pain that families of fallen soldiers feel every single day. The messages I have received from those families have been inspiring and humbling during this experience.
“Even when I have been struggling to walk down the stairs in the morning, there was never a doubt in my mind that I would get out every day and do my bit to remember those 635 lives. Each mile represented a fallen individual, and we would pay our respects by reading out their name as we completed the miles.”
Outside & Active Director, Matt Coyne said, “It has been humbling to witness the running and military community come together for a larger cause and message. We support a lot of runners to achieve what they didn’t think was possible and whilst Brian has an incredibly determined mindset, there have certainly been low moments throughout the challenge. Brian’s personal connection to this cause, having laid fellow soldiers to rest, has pushed him every step of the way and it was an honour to see him cross the finish line surrounded by his friends, family and local community.”
