Taking on the Multi-Stage Atacama Desert Race

Racing the Planet - - Tony Brammar

Tony Brammer is a Racing The Planet legend and veteran of the 4 Desert Race series after completing all four of the multi stage, 250km races in deserts around the world. Ultrarunner Magazine caught up with him and found out about his adventures.

Tell me about the 4 Desert Race Series you competed in?

The four multi stage races were in The Sahara – Egypt (now in Namibia), The Atacama – Chile, The Gobi – China (now in Mongolia) and The Last Desert – Antarctica. Each event is 250km.

They run over 7 days and it is a marathon every day, two marathons on a Thursday, a rest day on Friday and a precessional finish like a 10km for the final day.

They are unsupported so you have to carry a mandatory kit as well as everything you will need for a week.  There are checkpoints every 10km that provide water and medical support if needed.  I  would describe the terrain as running through someone’s rockery constantly for a week.

What did you do during your rest day?
