Sophie Power talks 24 Hour Challenges and Team GB Glory

“I think I’ll always see myself as the 14-year-old who came second last”

We have had the privilege of witnessing many aspects of Sophie Power’s life. Her endeavours, both in and out of races, have inspired women and girls nationwide to take up a sport.

“I was not a runner at school. I was one of the unsporty girls and came second last in the mile they made us do when I was about 14. When I picked up rowing at university, I used to wake up early and walk to the boat house; it was about a mile away, and I didn’t think I’d be able to run it with the rest of the crew.”

“At school, we could do cross country in sixth form, which meant you could leave the school gates to go for a run. That’s what it’s supposed to mean, except for me and my friend who lived opposite the school; we used to run out together, go to her house, put some pizza on and watch Neighbours and then try and look tired when we ran back in.”

Sophie went from zero to ultra, having signed up for the Marathon des Sables in her mid-twenties not quite realising what it was. She had barely run a mile at the time and had 9 months to prepare. She signed up for the Druid’s Challenge, a multi-day 85-mile challenge to prepare, with the Marathon de Sables the following year.

“I had an amazing experience at MdS, met incredible people and surprised myself as to how strong I was mentally and physically.  I realised that I liked ultra running as a way to see new countries and get away from stressful work and went on to do stage races all over the world for fun.”
