As an avid ultra runner, my journey into the world of endurance sports began in 2019, with a passion for pushing my physical and mental limits. I’ve always been an active person which has now evolved into a fervent pursuit of ultra distances. I’ve taken on and completed over 14 ultra races since 2020, ranging from the demanding 50-mile distances to the monumental 100-mile life changing challenges. With a dedicated training regimen consisting of 5-6 runs per week and twice-weekly strength sessions, I embrace the exhilarating challenges that the ultra-running world presents, constantly striving for personal achievement and growth and to inspire others. My next big challenge is the Race Across Scotland 215 this Summer.
I like to mix my running up on all types of terrain, roads, trails, and mountain paths, which each offer their own unique test of endurance. I get out in all weather conditions, so having the right clothing and gear is important to me.
Over the past couple of months, I have been testing the Salomon Sense Aero Wind Vest. I prefer to wear a wind vest or running gilet as a mid-layer or top layer, depending on the temperature and weather conditions.
As an ultra-runner I face many challenges when it comes to selecting the appropriate clothing for varying weather conditions. One significant issue is the need for versatile clothing that can adapt to the unpredictable nature of long-distance running. In colder conditions, the risk of hypothermia looms large, necessitating layers that provide warmth without sacrificing mobility or breathability. Conversely, in warmer conditions, I need to contend with the threat of heat exhaustion and dehydration, requiring lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that offer optimal ventilation and possible protection from the sun.
Finding running clothing with a delicate balance between being adequately breathable, while also preventing overheating, is a constant dilemma. In addition, other factors such as rain, wind and sometimes altitude, further complicate clothing choices, as I must anticipate and prepare for sudden shifts in weather conditions whilst out on a long run. Ultimately, wearing the right clothing is not only crucial for comfort and performance but also for ensuring my safety and well-being when taking on the Great British weather.
I have certainly put the Salomon Sense Aero Wind Vest through its paces and tested it in many different variables. The first thing I noticed is its feather-light construction, which feels barely there. To be honest, when the item arrived and I felt how lightweight and how paper-thin like the material was, I didn’t hold out much hope. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised with how it performed. First off, it provides remarkable wind resistance. I ran on some very gusty mountain passes, which the vest shielded me against chilly drafts without causing overheating thanks to its breathable design. It has small strategic holes so air can circulate for maximum breathability. While it excels in windy conditions, it also offers a basic level of water repellence, making it a versatile option for unpredictable weather.
The vest has some thoughtful features, such as a handy pocket for stashing essentials in, enough space for a couple of gels or some change and keys. This pocket also doubles up as a clever storage solution where you can pack the vest away inside itself to stow away in your pack when not being used. It has a reflective strip on the front of the vest and reflective branding on the side and rear which can be seen in dark conditions by passing lights on vehicles or people. The vest is full zip opening and includes a clever little snap button inside the zip, level with the breast which can be used when the zip is fully open to keep the vest in place promoting maximum ventilation for warmer days. It is constructed by Salomon’s Ripstop fabric which is a Fabric construction with a reinforced yarn for better durability and longevity, perfect for ultra runners of all ability levels.
Again, it is very light, only 50g in fact and can be packed down to the size of a tennis ball. The fit was perfect for me, with a snug yet non-restrictive feel that allows for fluid movement through all the terrain I tested it in. I am 5’11” and wore a medium and would say it was slim fitting but true to size.
Overall, the Salomon Sense Aero Wind Vest performed well for me, and I felt comfortable running every mile in it. The positives: the fit was perfect and looks stylish, it’s very lightweight, it’s very breathable and a great wind breaker. The negatives: the storage options could improve it slightly with maybe another pocket for storing gloves on the move. Is it value for money? Whilst I think it is slightly overpriced in the UK for your average ultra runner, I would recommend buying this vest if like me you run all types of distances on all types of terrain and want an additional layer which offers these adaptable features.
I will certainly continue to wear this vest on my runs.
