Congratulations go to Rupert Allison and Jessica Johnson, the winners of the 46-mile Sprint race, who have also shattered the course records.

Jessica set a new course record taking over 90 minutes off the previous fastest time. Completing the woman’s podium was Alice Kershaw followed by Sarah Doherty, who along with Helen Williams all beat the course record set by Louise Venables last year.

Rupert Allison crossed the finish line in remarkably fresh condition considering he’d pushed hard enough to take more than 40 minutes off the course record set by Jon Shields. He described the conditions as excellent and said that this was one of those rare days where everything went 99% to plan. Rupert also won the Summer Spine Sprint in June 2023 and set a new course record there too putting him in the uniquely awesome position of holding the CR for both editions of a #spinerace. In the men’s podium, Ian Cocks took 2nd place and Curtis Firth was third.

Over ten years the Spine Race has established itself as one of the world’s toughest endurance races. A seven-day, non-stop, ultramarathon along the 268-mile (431km) Pennine Way National Trail in the most hostile winter weather Britain can muster. We have witnessed some incredible feats of endurance, triumph and determination, set against some of the most challenging conditions you can face outdoors.

The inaugural Spine Race took place in 2012, with only 11 entrants, of which three ultimately crossed the finish line in Kirk Yetholm, Scotland. All Spine Race events are self-sufficient, meaning that all runners carry their own food, clothing, medical supplies, and sleep system. The route is not marked, runners must navigate the course. No planned outside support is allowed and pacers are not permitted.
