On May 1st, 2021, Ultrarunners lined up for a staggered 6 AM start to take part in the first edition of Ultra Scotland®. 50 miles of stunning trails along the Southern Upland Way where runners would pace through mountains, valleys, and forests to complete the challenge.
Starting in St Johns Town of Dalry, the route takes in the Striding Arches of Benbrake, the Covenants memorial at Allan’s Cairn, the town of Sanquhar and the highest village in Scotland, Wanlockhead, as well as asking its competitors to ascend 701m on Lowther Hill before finishing up in Moffat, with a cut off time of 18 hours!
“Marked as one of Scotland’s Great Trails, the Southern Upland Way offered breath-taking scenery to participants as they laced up once again, for a long awaited ‘in person’ race!”
Speaking to Ultrarunner Magazine, Wayne Drinkwater the GB Ultras Race Organiser for the 50-miler in Scotland, gave us a run down of the event, the winners of the day and what COVID secure measures were taken to provide ultrarunner’s and the local communities the event passed through with a safe and enjoyable event as we ease our way out of lockdown.
