Ponnek ‘Cruiser’ Shorts – Test & Review

"There is not a lot of weight to them at all, but they appear well made."

Ponnek Running is a lifestyle running brand born in Cornwall in 2022 and I’ve been asked to review their Ponnek ‘Cruiser’ Mens Shorts. Instantly I like their philosophy and brand values, they are centred around community producing sustainably manufactured apparel for use in active and casual environments.

“We make clothing – but that’s a by-product of something far greater.
Inspired by Trail-Culture, Running, Community, and Illustrators worldwide.
Technical, but not too technical. We are here to serve the Runner | Adventurer | Rester. Welcome to the club!”

Having not heard of Ponnek before I was keen to try out one of their range. Being sent the Cruiser Shorts couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve been on the hunt for some new shorts as mine were getting a little long in the tooth.

When the shorts arrived I opened up the packaging and was quite surprised about how light the shorts were. There is not a lot of weight to them at all, but they appear well made. Mainly black with some green accents they are a bit of a break from the usual single colour shorts.

They are a 5″ short which is short compared to what I normally use. My usual shorts are 7″ with the built in liners with pockets.

I got the Cruiser shorts in a size Medium which is my normal size. They fit well, snug but not enough to bother me, there is also a drawstring for adjustment.

They benefit from a small zipped pocket on the back. You can fit a car key and some gels in it, but that’s it. Unfortunately my phone wouldn’t fit (a Samsung S22 model).

Inside there is a mesh liner brief. Being mesh I thought it would be comfortable but with it being a brief style I found I felt it quite a bit around the inside of my upper leg. While it never caused any chafing I could always tell it was there. That and the small pocket are my only criticisms of the Cruiser shorts.

Overall I will keep using Ponnek’s Cruisers for shorter runs when I don’t need to carry a lot of kit.
