On Running Cloudrunner shoe – Test and Review

As a relative newbie to ultra running I am still in the testing stage for running shoes that give me the durability and cushioning that I would ideally want as I go the longer distances. So I was really happy to be given the chance to test the Cloudrunner shoe by On.

The Cloudrunner is perfectly suited to road-running and as my immediate vicinity for running is in the town where I live this was just what I needed. I wanted extra cushioning and these shoes are designed specifically to give me this. The deep soles felt good and the impact as I ran on the road felt easy in comparison to some of the running shoes I’d tried before. They were true to size and I felt like my toes had plenty of space.

The Cloudrunner shoe uses CloudTec advanced cushioning technology with Zero-Gravity foam. A rigid yet flexible patterned sole. Therefore allowing you to move inter-directionally without injury – supportive yet lightweight. This intrigued me so as I continued using them for both short and longer runs, I noticed the mesh fabric kept my feet aired, helping to keep moisture and sweat at bay. Though a little cold in Winter!

I also have a slighter weaker left ankle due to a fall a few years ago but I wasn’t hampered by any bad sensation whilst wearing the Cloudrunners. This is again down to the horizontal formation on the shoes soles – CloudTec, helping to absorb impacts from the ground. A heel to toe drop of 9mm.

They felt agile and the more I wore them the more I felt they were mimicking my foot shape and enabling me to pound the ground faster and stronger whilst keeping me supported.

Which leaves me to the design, they are very stylish, simple yet effective. The mesh fabric colour way came in a light silver, pale green and white looking great together (aptly titled ‘Frost’) but easy to get dirty! I was really impressed and even though the soles look like they might be too big, the overall design comes together attractively. Complete with black laces and black inner lining, there were several On logos but aren’t overpowering. You can tell they are high quality and well crafted. Just what you would expect for a Swiss engineered running shoe!

In March 2010 On’s revamped prototypes won the ISPO BrandNew Award (the most renowned seal of quality in the sports and outdoor industry) and since then they haven’t looked back. Athletes all around the world love them.

So did it feel like I was “running on clouds’… well the Cloudrunners are definitely cushioned, they give you extra lift – so yes I guess it was! Definitely worth a try if you’re running and training on roads, they seem to lessen the impact from the hard surface making it way more pleasurable.
