The North Coast 500 is said to be home to some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery. Over 500 miles of stunning costal route starting in the Northern city of Inverness and taking explorers through Applecross, Torridon, Ullapool, Caithness and John O’ Groats, before looping back to Inverness through Dingwall. Visit Scotland recommends taking on the mammoth adventure via two or four wheels, but Ultrarunner, Nick Lister laced up and took on the North coast 500 by foot.
Nick spoke to Ultrarunner Magazine detailing exactly what it took to be one of only two people to have successfully completed an ultramarathon along the Scottish Coast. Nick discusses the challenges he faced and how he overcame injury to finish the challenge in just eleven and a half days!
“I believe that a great Ultra runner is built from his or her experiences. The power of ‘failure’ should never be underestimated as a ‘super tool’ for growing into the best version of you, that you can be. If I had tried to take on a challenge like the North Coast 500 back in the early days, when I was just starting out, I would have stood no chance! I believe it is imperative that we go through those low points and come out on the other side, each time, earning valuable lessons on how to plan better, perform better, and be better; becoming stronger and faster each time we get back up!
