Montane Men’s Thermal Trail Tights – Test and Review

"The trail tights are exactly what you need for running, there is good stretch in them..."

Being out on the trails this Winter and Spring I’ve had many chances to try out Montane’s thermal trail tights. It’s a good thing they’re thermal as there’s been plenty of cold snaps and I’ve needed a good pair of running tights to keep me warm regularly. I found their Thermal Dynamic material was perfect for days that were icy cold in January to mildly cool ones in April. The thick fleece material kept blustery winds off me well and its Granite Loft outer added to provide good wind resistance on my thighs which is where I usually feel it the most.

They’ve kept me warm and dry on wetter days too, and I’ve found running in them very comfortable with no chafing. The large size was a little big on me but the high waisted band and drawcord kept them in place and I’ve been really impressed by their comfort and quality. After lots of runs I can tell that they’re very durable and will last a long time in my kit.

Montane thermal trail tights review

The trail tights are exactly what you need for running, there is good stretch in them yet they’re snug and breathable. The elastane and nylon fabric meant I had freedom and flex going up and down hills. The ankle zips meant I could check my socks and get my shoes off without any issues. The length of them were great for me being 5’9”.

The VIA lettering on the upper leg is reflective, as well as the VIA pattern on both of the bottom calf areas which is good for the darker mornings and evenings. They have a rear zipped pocket ideal for small keys or a gel, another two small rear gel pockets and handy ankle zips with reflective piping.

Overall I found they were warm and very comfortable when out running. Not waterproof but they kept me dry enough on light rainy days. They also dried out pretty quickly after washing so they were ready to put on the next day. The material is high quality and hardwearing which is good for the price.

As a technical piece for ultra running they will definitely remain an important part of my kit for the foreseeable future.
