Trail running, multi-terrain, off-road running, whichever label you prefer, offers all types of runners a new, different experience. And for some it’s their preferred format for ultra running.
To enjoy this to the best effect there is a plethora of kit available; shoes, clothing, accessories and this is where the Montane Gecko Vest Pack 5L + comes in. Mine is a bright postbox red (ideal for a Man Utd fan!) and useful if someone is trying to spot you from a distance!
As a body-hugging vest rather then something which hangs off you, it fills the tag line “Wear it. Don’t carry it.” perfectly.
With 4 main pockets on the front there is plenty of room to stow away your phone, food, keys and other important things. The two pockets up top come with the Montane UltraFlasks for easy to reach re-hydration. They’re also easily removed for cleaning which allows you to use the pockets for gels, phone etc.
This is where I stash my phone so I can whip it out when I’m lost!
I was very impressed with the stability of the vest even when filled with spare kit in the back pocket. There is no bounce or shift at all, and subsequently no annoying chafing. Too many times that sting in the shower reminds you that the kit didn’t quite fit.
Another feature which is often overlooked is the material; the Gecko is made with RAPTOR weave which gives it an unrivalled stretchiness and abrasion resistance. Very handy when you’re on a tricky technical run involving rugged terrain.
Enhanced ease of movement is essential for a running pack that will enable you to go further on the trail. Engineered with a stretchy plain weave accommodates for any necessary pack expansion on the move, whilst minimising bounce. Durable abrasion resistance also makes this an incredibly robust mountain companion – able to withstand potential wear and tear on more adventurous trail runs.

Post-run the added POLYGIENE treatment ensures the pack doesn’t stink of sweat, or ditchwater, by cleverly killing the odour-causing bacteria at source. This is a gamechanger!
Overall the vest performs exactly as sold and is a great addition for those short to mid length summer runs where you need to carry a few pieces and your raincoat.
