Through the snow-covered pine forests and white-tipped mountains of Artic Sweden, a 240km foot race takes place every year. Over frozen lakes and under Aurora’s guide, runners have five days to make their way through Europe’s last remaining wilderness in a self-sufficient, five-stage, multi-day race.
The Ice Ultra by Beyond the Ultimate is set in one of the most breath-taking and remote locations on the planet, lying inside the Arctic circle, where Ice forests and frozen lakes meet against a backdrop of snow-dusted peaks. Daytime temperatures can reach -40 degrees and daylight hours is short but nightfall – with no light pollution – is an endless plane of stars.
Ultrarunner Magazine caught up with this year’s Ice Ultra winner and highland Ultra champion, Jon Shield to discuss the race through Swedish Lapland!
Background
Around eight years ago, after a night-time parachute jump – while serving in the military – I was medically discharged after breaking my ankle, damaging my knee meniscus, and suffering from a label tear in my hip from a severe fall from the aircraft.
