Sat among the Alps is the Grossglockner mountain which towers at 3,798m (12,461ft), the highest mountain in Austria and the highest mountain east of the Brenner Pass. Possibly derived from the German word Glockner, meaning ‘bell’, the mountain was first summited in 1799.
Now with accessible trails (the ‘Glocknerrunde’), thousands flock to summit the Großglockner each year, averaging a few days when hiking. However, the Grossglockner Ultra Trail (Gross-glock-ner) allows you to experience 110km in a phenomenal trail race.
Race Director Hubert Resch created the race almost ten years ago, with over 30 years of mountain running and outdoor events experience: “As trail running began to arrive in central Europe, we found the idea exciting and decided to make a trail ultramarathon around Austria’s highest mountain.”
Since the first edition in 2015, the event has become a pinnacle in the European trail running community. The weekend has several routes happening across multiple trails:
- Grossglockner Ultra Trail (110km)
- Osttirol Trail (84km)
- Grossglockner Trail (55km)
- Weissee Gletscherwelt Trail (37km)
- Kaprun Scenic Trail (16km)
